A resident of Hitchin for over 35 years, Derrick Ashley was first elected to the County Council in 1985 to represent the interests of Hitchin South. Living in close proximity to the town centre Derrick shares the concerns of the local residents, many of whom have appreciated his efforts on their behalf over the years.


His campaigning priorities, particularly on Planning & Environmental Issues, have been rewarded with a number of cabinet positions and recognition regionally as a key player in opposing overdevelopment in this area, including the over expansion of Luton Airport. The current economic downturn may have reduced some of the development pressures on Hitchin but the desire of Stevenage and Luton to expand still remains.


‘‘Overdevelopment in North Hertfordshire is one of the biggest single challenges we face and if elected I will continue to campaign against huge green belt developments in this area” said Derrick. “It is unwanted, unnecessary and is being forced through in a totally undemocratic fashion. We do need some development to underpin our economy, particularly low cost housing, but what we do not need are massive commuter housing estates.”


“It goes without saying that over the next few years’ money will be very tight and I intend to be part of an administration that continues to rigorously cut costs and improve services wherever we can. I look forward to a Conservative government helping us to freeze increases in Council tax.”

A highly respected local and regional campaigner, Derrick has:

strongly supported more expenditure on our worn out roads ensuring that Hitchin gets its fair share of the investment
been spearheading Hertfordshire’s green waste solutions as the County’s waste supremo
promoted activities for young people through his involvement in various charities
actively pressed for the better access to the Town Centre currently being implemented
kept in touch with his constituents all year round through regular surgeries
successfully protected the Green Belt around Hitchin from encroachment
