Elected in May 2005 for a third successive term, Bernard Engel is a member of Children, School & Families (Education Panel) and the Transportation & Highways Panel.
He is a County Council nominated member of the Hertfordshire Police Authority, the Stansted Airport Consultative Committee and. the Birchanger Wood Trust. He is a committee member of the Bishop's Stortford Chamber of Commerce and a trustee of the Kings Cottages Trust, the Bishop's Stortford United Charities, the Bishop's Stortford Minibus Trust and the Stansted Airport Community Trust

Acting with Mark Prisk MP and his fellow County Councillors in Bishop's Stortford he is working with the Police to curb the anti-social behaviour by that small minority of young people whose harassment and intimidation of their neighbourhoods is out of all proportion to their actual numbers.

The major developments already underway or actively planned in the centre of Bishop's Stortford (up to sixteen hundred dwellings plus offices, a hotel, two supermarkets and other retail outlets) are a cause of great concern especially as the highways system of the historic market town is not designed to handle the anticipated volume of traffic.

A major review of the relatively minor improvements presently planned to cope with the already congested highways network is urgently required and Bernard is lobbying to bring this about.

As a member of the Stansted Airport Consultative Committee he is engaged with BAA management trying to ensure that the planned expansion of the airport to the full capacity of the single runway is matched by the timely provision of the necessary road and rail infrastructure.

He is adamantly opposed to the proposal for a second runway at Stansted.

Bernard does not hold Surgeries but welcomes contact at any time and is always willing to meet with constituents who require help or advice.
