Richard is the Cabinet Member for Education & Skills his responsibilty is for Learning and School Effectiveness, Relations with further and higher education together with Integrated Youth Support
Richard was born in Hitchin and has lived in the area all his life. He is married to Jane, with five children and four grandchildren. As a resident of the Village of Gosmore since 1978, Richard shares the concerns of residents in the rural areas of the Knebworth and Codicote Division, which he has represented since 2007.
His campaigning has led to his recognition as a leading figure in opposing overdevelopment in this area, the over-expansion of Luton Airport and a reduction in the number of night flights. The current economic downturn may have reduced some of the development pressures in the short term but the threat is still there.
“Overdevelopment in North Hertfordshire is one of the biggest single challenges we face and if re-elected I will continue to campaign against huge Green Belt development in this area” said Richard. “It is unwanted, unnecessary and is being forced through in a totally undemocratic fashion. We do need some development to underpin our economy, particularly low cost housing, but we do not need massive commuter housing estates.”
“It goes without saying that over the next few years’ money will be very tight and I intend to be part of an administration that continues to rigorously cut costs and improve services wherever we can.”
A highly respected local and regional campaigner, Richard has:strongly supported more expenditure on our worn out roads to ensure that the villages get a fair share of the investment supported traffic calming, improved speed control and pedestrian crossings on busy village roads promoted job opportunities for young people through his involvement with the Hertfordshire Careers Service argued for the early widening of the A1(M) to reduce the rat-running through the villages regularly attended Parish Council meetings to keep in touch with local issues successfully protected the Green Belt from unnecessary encroachment
“I have appreciated the support residents have given me in trying to stand up for the best interests of this County Division and I am asking for your continued support in this election.”
